Last orders pre-Brexit: UK pub boss cuts beer prices

British pub chain JD Wetherspoon, known for its cheap beer, slashed prices further on Friday as its vocal Brexit-backing founder Tim Martin shared anticipated savings.

"Wetherspoon pubs across the UK are today cutting the price of a pint," the company said in a statement.

The group added that a pint of real ale had been slashed by an average of 20 pence, with the Ruddles brand being served for as low as £1.59 ($1.95, 1.77 euros).

"A lot of politicians have misled the public by suggesting leaving the Customs Union would be a 'cliff edge' or 'disaster'," Martin said.

"This is the reverse of the truth. Ending tariffs will reduce prices."

British MPs this week voted to legislate to stop Prime Minister Boris Johnson taking Britain out of the European Union without a divorce deal on October 31.

But they also rejected his call for a snap general election to resolve the political deadlock that has characterised the past three years since the 2016 referendum vote in favour of Brexit.
