  • Widespread layoffs hit the Republican National Convention Monday, impacting all departments but especially the "Trump Victory" fundraising effort
  • The RNC has been a vocal supporter of Donald Trump's unfounded accusations of voter fraud, but this shift suggests they may be ready to move on
  • The downscaling is standard for the end of an election. The RNC has expanded efforts in Georgia ahead of decisive Senate runoffs

The Republican National Committee has abruptly laid off many workers, including staffers of the “Trump Victory” fundraising effort.

The RNC and its chairwoman Ronna McDaniel have backed Donald Trump’s unsubstantiated claims of election fraud, maintaining that Trump will still win the 2020 election despite the Associated Press calling the election for Democrat Joe Biden.

The layoffs, however, suggest that the RNC is preparing for its election efforts to end as they had been pre-planned to scale back spending after the election, reports CNN. The percentage of personnel let go varied across the RNC’s various departments but a source within the organization told CNN it was “a large portion.”

The highest rate of layoffs was among “Trump Victory” fundraisers, part of a joint effort between the RNC and the Trump campaign to raise money for election efforts.

The RNC has also opted not to repeat the staffing surge they sent to Florida during the 2000 recount, dispatching only a handful of staff to Georgia in anticipation of dual runoffs that will determine control of the Senate.

Trump has yet to acknowledge his electoral defeat. A growing number of Republicans, however, have reached out to congratulate Biden and have begun preparing for a Democrat-controlled White House.

The firings may be an indication that the RNC, a strident and reliable supporter for Trump even after the election was called, is starting to do likewise.

“Layoffs are the logical next step considering the outcome,” an RNC source told CNN.
