LeBron James Net Worth: Lakers Star Joins Billionaire Club With NBA Contracts, Investments
LeBron James’ net worth has reached the heights of no other active player in NBA history. The Los Angeles Lakers’ star is now a billionaire, according to Forbes.
If Forbes’ estimation is correct, James has reached a goal that has been years in the making. While signing multiple maximum salary contracts in the NBA and increasing his net worth with various investments off the court, the Los Angeles Lakers’ star has long stated that he wants to become a billionaire.
"If it happens. It’s my biggest milestone,” James told GQ in 2014. Obviously. I want to maximize my business. And if I happen to get it, if I happen to be a billion-dollar athlete, ho. Hip hip hooray! Oh, my God, I’m gonna be excited."
Michael Jordan’s net worth is north of $1 billion, but the Chicago Bulls’ legend didn’t reach the 10-figure milestone until retirement. James is entering his 20th NBA season, and the four-time MVP still looks like he can play at a high level for several more years.
James has one year left on his contract with the Lakers, which will pay him a guaranteed $44.47 million salary for the 2022-23 season. The 37-year-old has earned north of $387 million in salary over his career with the Lakers, Cleveland Cavaliers and Miami Heat. James’ on-court earnings will approach $432 million as he heads toward free agency next summer.
Jordan Brand is ultimately what pushed its namesake over the $1 billion mark, and James’ shoe deal is key to his financial success. James is signed to a lifetime contract with Nike that is believed to be worth more than $30 million per year.
Forbes listed James as the world’s second-highest-paid athlete over the last year, putting him behind only soccer star Lionel Messi. From May 2021 to May 2022, James made an estimated $121.2 million, $80 million of which resulted from off-court ventures.
Springhill Company, James’ entertainment firm, was valued at $725 million in an investment deal last year. The company produced “Space Jam: A New Legacy,” which starred James and was released in July 2021.
James is also a minority sports owner. The NBA star bought 2% of Liverpool F.C. in 2011. The soccer club is valued at $4.1 billion, according to Forbes.
James is eligible to sign a two-year, $97 million extension with the Lakers this summer.
