LeBron James reacted to Drew Brees' statement suggesting that the “take a knee” protest disrespected the U.S. flag.
Former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick was the first to kneel during the national anthem to protest against racial violence and police brutality. He was subsequently blackballed from the league.
According to Brees, the New Orleans Saints quarterback, he doesn’t agree with any football player kneeling during the national anthem. For him, it is a sign of disrespect.
“I will never agree with anybody disrespecting the flag of the United States of America or our country,” Brees told Yahoo!
However, his statement didn’t sit well with NBA superstar James. The Los Angeles Lakers took to Twitter to fire back at Brees.
“WOW MAN!!” James wrote. “Is it still surprising at this point. Sure isn’t! You literally still don’t understand why Kap was kneeling on one knee?? Has absolute nothing to do with the disrespect of [flag] and our soldiers(men and women) who keep our land free. My father-in-law was one of those.”
However, the basketball players’ tweet was met with mixed reactions from some of his followers. Some defended Brees, others supported James.
“If we want to really keep it real, the real disrespect to our servicemen and women is thinking that you need to speak for them. I will respect everyone’s opinion on both sides of this issue because that is your constitutional right, just keep me out of it,” @DTurn21 commented.
Marcus Davenport, Brees' teammate defended him. Davenport stressed that Brees was not talking about the current protests and riots. He was just talking about his feelings concerning the act of kneeling during the National Anthem.
Meanwhile, many also shared James’ support for Kaepernick.
“To be fair, and I'm a vet who supports Kaps right to kneel in protest, there is another side to this I can understand. Lots of people have lost loved ones and the last image they see is a flag being removed from that casket, folded, and handed to them. Just FYI,” @PHXGTR opined.
James wasn’t the only one who reacted with dismay to Brees’ statement. One said that what he finds disrespectful to the flag is “killing black people in the streets” and “tear gassing citizens who lawfully assemble.”
