A boy was in a coma after a leech entered his body through his anus while playing in the floodwaters in the Malaysian state of Terengganu over the weekend.

The young boy was playing in the floodwaters Sunday when the leech entered his body. The following morning, the boy started vomiting blood and he was rushed to a nearby hospital. Doctors immediately conducted tests and removed the leech from the boy’s body. Despite this, the boy remained in a comatose state due to loss of blood.

Meanwhile, prior to the surgery, one of the boy’s relatives took to Facebook on Monday requesting people to pray for him.

“My cousin Muhammad Hanee Ar rifa'e bin Mohd Nahsamziha is currently in critical condition in ICU. Still waiting for surgery. A lot of blood loss after a leech entered his body through his back. It is a reminder that everyone in this flood season should always be alert. May Rifae's mother continue to stand firm in this regard. Rifae a strong boy! May you recover quickly,” the relative wrote.

Meanwhile, at least two people, including a seven-year-old boy, were dead and thousands displaced in the floods that devastated many northern states of Malaysia over the weekend. The floods also resulted in road closures due to which several tourists were left stranded.
