‘Legion’ Season 2 Spoilers: ‘Wonder Woman’ Actor Saïd Taghmaoui Leaves FX Series
Saïd Taghmaoui has left the upcoming Season 2 of FX’s “Legion.”
Taghmaoui was supposed to play the true form of Amahl Farouk, aka the Shadow King, in the new season of the Noah Hawley-created series. But an FX spokesperson confirmed to Variety on Tuesday that Taghmaoui has exited the show, which is currently in production in Los Angeles. While the network representative said that a decision was made to recast his role, the reason behind the recasting was not revealed. As of writing, no new actor has yet been set.
Taghmaoui, who played Sameer in this year’s summer blockbuster “Wonder Woman,” first announced his departure from the series on Saturday. “Finally I’m not going to be in ‘Legion,’” the 44-year-old actor wrote on Instagram alongside a photo of him in full makeup and prosthetics. While he didn’t reveal the reason behind his exit, Taghmaoui revealed that there’s “a big surprise coming soon.”
Farouk was played by two different actors in Season 1. Aubrey Plaza portrayed the mutant parasite in the guise of David Haller’s (Dan Stevens) friend Lenny, while Quinton Boisclair played the villain as a monster who haunted Haller. According to Variety, both actors are set to reprise their versions of the character in Season 2.
In the Season 1 finale, Farouk finally got out of David’s body. But since it needs a host in order to survive, the character attached itself to Oliver Bird (Jemaine Clement), who sped off south — along with Lenny — in the final moments of the season ender.
“It’s unfortunate for Jemaine that he’s stuck with this thing inside of him, but it does make him rather critical to our story,” Hawley said (via Comic Book Resources) during a press event last March.
While it remains to be seen whether Farouk had any particular reason for picking Oliver as his new host, Hawley said that one of things he’s excited for the next season is to see the onscreen chemistry between Clement and Plaza.
“I had a big scene in episode 7 with Bill Irwin and Jemaine Clement, because if you have Bill Irwin and Jemaine Clement [on the same show], you have to have a big scene with them. I think there’s something similar to Aubrey and Jemaine, which is the energy of those two characters,” Hawley said (via The Hollywood Reporter). “Together, it creates such an exciting possibility in terms of storytelling. … I think it’s going to be really interesting to see what happens with them [in Season 2].”
The 10-episode Season 2 of “Legion” is expected to premiere in early 2018 on FX.
