With 2020 being the dismal year that it was, everyone is looking for a little bit of luck in 2021, and a lemon pig just might help you find it.

As weird as a New Year’s tradition as a lemon pig is, the fruit-toothpick figure is thought to bring good luck to those that create it throughout the entire year.

While the lemon pig resurfaced on social media as of recently, it wasn’t until 2017 when the good luck charm reared its head after disappearing for many years. Images of the piglet started to make its way around the internet as fans of the lucky pig started to fashion their own lemon pig to take them into the New Year.

But the history of the lemon pig dates back much further.

The lemon pig was first created back in the late 19th and early 20th centuries when it was used as table décor. It made a reappearance in 2017 when a cookbook author discovered it in a 1971 party-planning book called “401 Party and Holiday Ideas from Alcoa” – an aluminum foil company, CNN said.

The lemon pig has also appeared in literary works such as “Patty’s Social Season” by Carolyn Wells and “The Art of Amusing” by Frank Bellow, and one was even gifted to President Rutherford B. Hayes in the late 19th century, according to CNN.

However, there is no true evidence that these lemon pigs guarantee luck. But still, many believe the lucky heifer can ward off any bad spirits that may haunt them in the coming year.

To see if a lemon pig brings you luck in 2021, here’s how you can make your own.

  1. To create your own lemon pig, you will need to use a lemon that will serve as the pig’s body.
  2. Next, use a knife to slit a mouth in one end of the lemon, where you will place a penny.
  3. Add two round ears into the rind with a knife above both sides of the mouth.
  4. Use two peppercorns or cloves as the eyes of your lemon pig.
  5. Place four toothpicks at the bottom of the lemon to act as the legs of your pig’s body.
  6. Grab a piece of aluminum foil and twist it into a curly pig’s tail. You’ll need to push it into the other end of the lemon, opposite the face of the pig.
  7. Insert the penny into the lemon pig’s mouth and wish for some good luck in 2021 and beyond.

Some lemon pig creators add fashionable twists to customize their lemon pig and perhaps bring themselves more luck.
