Lena Dunham Wishes She Had An Abortion, Angers Twitter
“Girls” creator and star Lena Dunham is a pretty eloquent writer and speaker. However, she seemed to have missed the point somewhat when she talked about abortion rights and issues a few days ago.
While hosting Women of the Hour for her podcast, Dunham recalled a visit to a Texas Planned Parenthood years ago, during which a girl asked her to share her experience with abortion, according to Entertainment Weekly. “I sort of jumped. ‘I haven’t had an abortion,’ I told her. I wanted to make it really clear to her that, as much as I was going out and fighting for other women’s options, I myself had never had an abortion,” Dunham said.
“And I realized then that even I was carrying within myself stigma around this issue. Even I, the woman who cares as much as anybody about a woman’s right to choose, felt that it was important that people know that I was unblemished in this department,” she continued.
Dunham then applauded her loved ones for braving abortion and committed to throw “in the garbage” whatever stigma she has concerning abortion. “Now I can say that I still haven’t had an abortion, but I wish I had,” she concluded.
After her podcast, angry listeners took to Twitter to express their disgust and disdain toward Dunham’s lack of understanding towards the issue. People accused her of trivializing the “awful” procedure, adding that pro-choice activists definitely did not appreciate her remarks.
“FYI an abortion is not something you ‘get to have.’ It’s an awful experience one SHOULDN’T wish for like a gift from Santa,” an angry user commented.
Another questioned, “She ‘wishes’ she had an abortion she said. Who says that?!?!” Someone even wrote back a sarcastic reply saying that Dunham “is someone with no moral compass, a depraved mind.”
The bashing did not end there.
