Leona Lewis has claimed that Michael Costello left her "embarrassed and deeply hurt" when they worked together in 2014, but the designer is challenging her account.
The "Bleeding Love" singer made the accusation Tuesday, a day after the "Project Runway" alum claimed that Chrissy Teigen's alleged bullying led him to have suicidal thoughts that same year. While Lewis expressed compassion for his mental health struggles, she suggested that this was a "pot calling the kettle black" situation.
"I feel that I have to say something as I've dealt with years of insecurity from it. I don't condone any kind of bully behavior and I'm sorry for what Michael Costello went through," Lewis began her statement.
According to the "X Factor" winner, she had flown out to New York in 2014 for an unspecified charity fashion show where Costello was supposed to dress her. However, the singer claimed that Costello and his team were not very welcoming to her.
"When I got to my fitting I was made to feel very awkward and uncomfortable as the dress was a sample size and he/his team clearly did not want to alter it to fit me," Lewis alleged. "This came as a total surprise because weeks prior I was told that they would make the dress work for me."
Lewis claimed that at the next fitting, which was the night before the event, Costello did not show up. She alleged that the designer "no longer wanted to dress me and he abandoned his commitments to me and the show which made me well aware that I wasn't the body type required."
Lewis went on to say that the experience left her feeling "embarrassed and deeply hurt." And due to the sizing issues, she claimed, "I was not permitted to walk in his dress. I had to sit in the audience and was asked by press why I didn't walk in the show. I remember having to come up with excuses as I was so humiliated by it all."
"The most hurtful thing is that it was to raise money for charity, and this went against everything we were trying to do," she wrote.
Lewis acknowledged that Costello's designs now cater to "women of all sizes." However, she said she felt the need to speak up on his alleged hypocrisy.
"We all make mistakes, I know that I have, but at this time I feel that when people apologize (Chrissy) and show sincere remorse and rehabilitation for their actions, we should embrace them and not try and kick them when they're down," she continued.
Lewis admitted that she didn't inform Costello about what she was feeling at the time. She ended her post by apologizing to anyone she might have hurt without knowing, adding that she was sure this was the case with her alleged situation with Costello.
Costello responded to Lewis' accusations later Tuesday via Instagram Stories, saying he'd attempted to reach out to her personally to address her claims. He claimed he had left dress options for Lewis at the time and that she told him she loved them.
He also said he had several emails from her team dating back to 2014 inquiring about his designs, including one from a stylist's assistant seeking a look for Lewis for last month's "American Idol" finale.
"You have never indicated to me how you felt, and you've continuously worn me, tagged me and had your team reach out to me to request more dresses… As recent as last month," Costello wrote in his message. "I have lost tons of opportunities, sleepless nights and I'm not in a good mental state of mind. I wish you spoke to me directly instead of Instagram, especially when I am at my most vulnerable moment."
"I pray your intentions are pure, and that you're not acting recklessly in an attempt to smear me and all the dresses I created for you to save a friend," he continued. "If you were in my position, I'm sure you would equally be as shocked."
Costello concluded his post by saying he was open to a "heart-to-heart conversation" whenever Lewis was ready.
