Lesbian Couple Weds in Katmandu
New York was the latest state to legalize same-sex marriage, but what are the laws like in Nepal?
Last Monday, an American lesbian couple wed in a temple in Katmandu, following the traditional Hindu guidelines except for for that pesky man-woman part.
Although it's not currently legal, Nepal is close to approving same-sex marriage. The government officially recognized homosexuals in 2007.
The American couple -- Sarah Welton, 48 and Courtney Mitchell, 41-- live in Colorado where they can be domestic partners. They are considering an official marriage in Iowa.
Mitchell worked for the Peace Corps in Nepal and fell in love with the country.
I have always loved Nepal and wanted to bring Sarah here, Mitchell told CNN. I also wanted to be part of the success of the movement in Nepal for sexual minorities.
