  • Roman Reigns and John Cena are set to face off for the Universal Championship
  • Reigns is the current holder of the title
  • It was John Cena who challenged Reigns for the fight

Roman Reigns on Wednesday took a dig at John Cena, saying the 13-time WWE champion is "levels below" him ahead of their clash at the WWE Summerslam.

John Cena and Reigns are set to face off in the singles match at the SummerSlam for the WWE Universal Championship. Reigns is the current holder of the title.

Reigns, who is currently a top attraction in WWE, returned at SummerSlam last year and ever since, he has been doing the best work of his career. Since his comeback, Reigns has not been pinned even once but he faces a tough challenge in John Cena at the Summerslam, which is due to be held on Aug. 21 at the Allegiant Stadium in Nevada's town of Paradise.

"There's a lot of good things John Cena's done. Obviously, Make-a-Wish, very charitable, but when it comes to our profession of sports entertainment, he's levels below me in this game. Entertainment is storytelling right? I'm the greatest storyteller of our generation and he's a big name, he's a big star, he's a movie star now, but he, like so many other greats, they camouflage themselves, they disguise themselves. You see me every Friday night," Reigns, who appeared on the latest episode of The Pat McAfee Show, said.

Following John Cena's return at WWE Money in the Bank, he took little time to challenge Reigns for the Universal Championship. The Tribal Chief initially rejected John Cena's challenge, but the 44-year-old WWE superstar forced his way into a title match after he stole Finn Balor's shot at the title.

In the same interview, Reigns went on to elaborate on what John Cena should have done on his return instead of challenging for the WWE Universal Championship. The current Universal champion insisted that John Cena should have simply promoted his movies.

"To me, if he would have just come here, promote his movies, 'Suicide Squad,' Yay! It's a good movie. Go watch it'. You can open the show, you can pep up the crowd, do that, and then I'll stay in the main event where I belong, and I'll close the show and we're done," added Reigns.

Dubbed "The Biggest Party of the Summer," SummerSlam is one of the original "Big Four" pay-per-view events of WWE, along with WrestleMania, Royal Rumble and Survivor Series. It is considered as the WWE's second biggest event of the year after WrestleMania.

At the 2020 edition of the Summerslam, "The Fiend" Bray Wyatt defeated Braun Strowman to claim the Universal Championship. However, a few days later, at the Payback event, Reigns with his new manager Paul Heyman defeated Bray Wyatt and Braun Strowman by pinfall to clinch his second Universal Championship.
