KEY POINTS

  • Lewis Hamilton has won six world titles to Schumacher's seven
  • Hamilton is also 7 wins away from equaling Schumacher's all-time record of 91 Grand Prix wins
  • The start of the F1 season has been postponed due to coronovirus outbreak

Four-time champion Alan Prost has insisted that Lewis Hamilton and Michael Schumacher cannot be compared as they belong to very different eras of Formula One (F1).

Ahead of the F1 2020 season, all eyes are on reigning champion Hamilton as the Briton is chasing Schumacher’s world record of seven drivers’ titles. Prost, however, believes that Hamilton will face a battle to retain his title as the start of the season has already been hit with the pandemic coronavirus.

Last season, Hamilton established himself as the best driver on the grid once again as he secured his third straight and overall sixth drivers’ championship. He is also just seven victories away from equaling Schumacher’s all-time record of 91 Grand Prix wins.

While several fans, pundits and former racers have already accepted that Hamilton is the greatest racer of all-time, a few still are adamant that Schumacher remains the ultimate legend of F1.

Prost, who drove for McLaren, Renault and Ferrari during his decorated F1 career, believes it won’t be easy for Hamilton to match Schumacher’s feat in the upcoming season.

“They are drivers of a different generation. You should not compare them. What Hamilton has done with his team is without a doubt exceptional. Hamilton has a good chance [in the title race], but there will be more competition this season,” Prost told Dutch channel NOS.

"Today's drivers get so much data from the engineers; they no longer have to think so much,” Prost added further.
