'Lincoln' Theatrical Movie Poster Released: Daniel Day-Lewis Looks Identical To 16th US President [PHOTO]
Dreamworks has released the official poster for the upcoming Steven Spielberg film "Lincoln." Set to debut in theatres on Nov. 9, The film is directed by Spielberg and based on Doris Kearns Goodwin's biography of Lincoln, Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln. The “Lincoln” screenplay was written by John Logan, Tony Kushner, and Paul Webb.
The film, starring Daniel Day-Lewis as Abraham Lincoln, is said to focus on the political disagreements of the 16th President of the United States and the powerful men of his cabinet While attempting to abolish slavery and end of the Civil War.
In an interview, Tony Kushner said that it took six years for him to complete the script and in doing so, took an interest in "the relationship of Lincoln to the abolitionist left." Kushner also reportedly admired Lincoln’s "incredible ability to finesse very, very treacherous political circumstances and continue to move the country forward."
Actor Liam Neeson was originally cast as Abraham Lincoln in January 2005. In preparation for the role, Neeson studied Lincoln extensively. However, in July 2010, Neeson left the project, saying that he was "too old to play the former commander-in-chief".In November 2010, it was announced that Day-Lewis would replace Neeson in the role.
In addition to Day-Lewis as Lincoln, the film stars Sally Field as First Lady Mary Todd Lincoln, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt as their oldest son Robert Todd Lincoln. The film opens in limited release on Nov. 9, then expands nationally on Nov. 16.
