LIV Golf News: Expanded Tournament Schedule, More Prize Money Coming In 2023
The LIV Golf International Series is only two events into its inaugural season, but the Saudi-financed league is already planning on a significant expansion for next year. The PGA Tour’s new rival announced Wednesday that it will have a 14-tournament schedule with players competing for $405 million in prize purses.
The 2022 LIV Golf schedule features eight tournaments and a total of $255 million up for grabs in total prize money. Each LIV Golf field has 48 players and 12 teams that are made up of four golfers.
The size of each LIV Golf field will remain the same in 2023, but there will be 12 established team franchises. This year, different teams have been created prior to each tournament with a draft.
“LIV Golf’s expanding global platform will add a new dimension to the golf ecosystem as we know it, one that provides an opportunity for players and fans around the world to help maximize our beloved sport’s true potential,” said Greg Norman, CEO and Commissioner of LIV Golf. “Our franchise model will bring new energy and excitement to fans from all corners of the world, establishing a league of teams to connect and grow with. The International Series will attract new talent and offer unprecedented pathways that develop the next generation of stars. LIV Golf is committed to making sustainable investments that grow the game now and for the future, and we are proud to turn these dreams into a reality.”
Some LIV Golf stars have noted that the light schedule is one of the reasons why they chose the Saudi-backed league over the PGA Tour. Players on the PGA Tour are required to play in 15 tournaments per year, just one more than is on the 2023 LIV Golf schedule.
Specific dates and courses for next year's LIV Golf schedule have yet to be announced.
LIV Golf has slowly been luring away some of the biggest names in the sport. Dustin Johnson, Phil Mickelson and Sergio Garcia have been part of the tour since the first tournament. Brooks Koepka and Bryson DeChambeau highlighted the debuts at LIV Golf Portland. Former European Ryder Cup Captain Henrik Stenson will compete for LIV Golf for the first time at Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, New Jersey.
The LIV Golf Invitational Bedminster, the third event of the year, starts on Friday.
