Liverpool In Dilemma As $275K Star Demands To Be Made Record Earner With $550K-A-Week

Mo Salah’s agent, who flew into England Saturday, is reportedly in talks with Liverpool FC over a massive contract for his Egyptian client.

Salah, who has scored over 100 Premier League goals for Liverpool, has demanded a weekly wage of around $550,000 as a part of his new contract with the Anfield side, reported The Telegraph.

The former Roma forward Salah has less than two years left on his current deal with Liverpool. One of the best soccer players in the world right now, Salah began the 2021-22 campaign with fiery performances. He will be happy to remain on the Merseyside, provided the Reds responded with a new deal that would justify his talent and contributions, according to sports media outlet Give Me Sport.

If Liverpool agree to Salah’s demands, the 29-year-old winger would become the club’s highest-paid player.

In the underway Premier League season, Salah has scored seven goals in eight matches. Out of which, six goals have come in six consecutive games. Moreover, in Liverpool’s last two league games, which were against Manchester City and Watford, Salah provided an assist as well. Even in the Champions League, Salah has netted three goals in two matches.

Salah’s contract talks are set to be complicated, especially since a club’s wage bracket reportedly cannot exceed 70% of its revenue. Salah’s current salary is believed to be around $275,000-a-week, according to Liverpool.com.

Coincidentally, it is the same figure Luis Suarez had received as a part of his final contract at Liverpool in 2013. Suarez belonged to a Liverpool era that was vastly different from the current one. Back in the 2012-13 season, Suarez was the leading goal scorer in the Premier League and led Liverpool to League Cup trophy the previous term. To emphasize more on Suarez’s role in Anfield, the club needed the player more than the player needing the club.

Following his failed attempt to join Arsenal, Liverpool increased Suarez’s weekly wage from $165,000 to $275,000. No Liverpool player had ever been paid even close to that before Suarez became the record earner at Anfield.

Salah, who moved from Roma to Liverpool in 2017, has missed only seven matches for the Reds so far. Every appearance seems like a goal guarantee as the Egypt national has finished as Liverpool’s top scorer in each of the seasons since his maiden campaign. He has been a key figure in Jurgen Klopp's side's title victories in the Premier League, Champions League, Super Cup and Club World Cup.

Had Salah been doing the same for Liverpool’s side in 2010-2013, the club would have agreed to any said demand of the talented player. But then he wouldn’t win any trophies since there wouldn’t have been the likes of Virgil van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Andy Roberton, Sadio Mane, Fabinho and Roberto Firmino.

In the current Liverpool setup, there are many other world-class stars other than Salah and which is why negotiating and receiving the asked deal could be a task for the Egyptian winger.

It will be interesting to see if Liverpool go out of their way to keep their best player happy and offer Salah $550,000-a-week or the player accepts the financial reality and earn less than what he would earn in Paris and Manchester or Liverpool’s No. 11 call it quits and part ways with his beloved club.
