  • Luis Diaz has scored 16 goals in the 2021-22 season
  • He is expected to reach Liverpool Thursday
  • Diaz's Colombia lost 1-0 to Argentina on Wednesday

Luis Diaz reportedly parted ways with his Colombian national team and caught a chartered flight to Liverpool on Wednesday.

Liverpool signed Diaz while he was away on national duty. Diaz’s international break ended with a disappointment as Colombia lost 1-0 to Argentina in their World Cup Qualifiers fixture.

Diaz started the match, which was played at Estadio Mario Alberto Kempes, Cordoba, Argentina. Lautaro Martinez’s 29th-minute strike helped the hosts seal the game. It left the 25-year-old Diaz in tears but he has a new chapter waiting ahead of him with a new life thousands of kilometers away in the U.K.

Following the loss in Cordoba, the Colombian players traveled together to the airport, where Diaz bid goodbye and boarded his flight to Liverpool, according to Spanish media outlet RCN. It is understood that he will soon be meeting his new teammates at Liverpool.

The former Porto winger is expected to reach Liverpool on Thursday and the process for his work permit will begin from the following day, according to Teamtalk. The report has further claimed that Diaz may not be ready to make his debut for Liverpool in their upcoming fixture, against Cardiff City in the FA Cup on Sunday.

Diaz will be competing with the likes of Mohamed Salah, Digo Jota, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino for a place in Liverpool’s starting XI.

In the first half of the 2021-22 season, Diaz scored 16 goals and provided six assists in 28 appearances for Porto, across all competitions. He scored 14 of those goals in 18 league games and helped Porto dominate. Sérgio Conceição’s side is six points clear at the top of the league table after 20 matches.

"I could not be happier that we’ve been able to get this deal done and bring Luis to Liverpool. I have always been a believer in only signing players in January if you would want to sign them in the summer, and that’s very much the case with Luis. He is an outstanding player and someone we’ve been tracking for a very long time," Klopp told Liverpool’s official website after Diaz’s signing.
