  • It was their first league trophy in a decade

Aston Villa reportedly want to appoint Liverpool FC legend Steven Gerrard as their new head coach.

Gerrard, who is currently managing Scottish club Rangers FC, is open to moving to the Premier League, reported Goal. However, International Business Times could not verify it independently.

Aston Villa is planning to approach Rangers in the next 48 hours seeking permission to speak to Gerrard, according to The Guardian. The former midfielder led Rangers to the Scottish Premiership title last season, which was the Glasgow-based club's first league title in a decade.

Aston Villa sacked their manager, Dean Smith, earlier this week following five successive defeats in the Premier League. Smith returned the Midlands club into the Premier League in 2019 and steered them to an 11th-place finish last season. However, after 11 matches in the 2021-22 season, Aston Villa are at the 16th spot and have a goal difference in negative.

Though Aston Villa are looking to make their new head coach official before their next Premier League game, which is against Brighton on Nov. 20, Gerrard is under a contract with Rangers until 2024.

While Rangers would not be willing to let Gerrard leave in the middle of the season, they may give in should Aston Villa pay a compensation fee, believed to be around $3.3 million, the Goal report claimed.

The 41-year-old is widely believed to succeed Jurgen Klopp as Liverpool's next boss. Klopp is under a contract until 2024 and he is not expected to leave before that. Keeping that in mind, it would be difficult for Gerrard right now to turn down a chance to manage a Premier League club.

Aston Villa could be a great bridge for Gerrard to test waters in the English top-flight before bagging the dream job at Anfield, where he had spent 17 years of his playing career.

Gerrard, who joined Liverpool's youth academy in 1989, rose through the ranks and went on to make his senior debut with the Reds in 1998. The Englishman made over 700 competitive appearances for Liverpool but failed to fulfill a long-awaited dream of the entire city – winning the Premier League. However, he did lift the coveted Champions League trophy in 2005.

Liverpool's long wait of 30 years finally ended in 2020 when Klopp's side won the club's first-ever Premier League trophy and overall, their 19th league title.
