  • Mohamed Salah is in isolation after testing positive for COVID-19
  • The Liverpool forward is set to miss friendlies and Premier League matches
  • Salah could have contracted the coronavirus at his brother's wedding in Cairo

Mohamed Salah becomes the latest footballer to test positive for COVID-19. The 28-year-old underwent a medical swab and was found to have contracted the coronavirus, but he is not suffering from any symptoms.

Salah's COVID-19 diagnosis was revealed by the Egyptian Football Association in a statement Friday. The development came at a bad time, with Egypt set to face Togo in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier set to take place in Cairo. The rest of the team was also tested but turned out to be negative.

"The coronavirus test taken by our national team has shown that our international player Mohamed Salah, the star of Liverpool, has been infected with coronavirus after receiving a positive test result, although he is not suffering from any symptoms," the statement read.

Salah is now in isolation and will undergo more checks. Despite this development, the 28-year-old is not expected to be sidelined for long unless he develops mild symptoms of the coronavirus.

Salah has been doing well for Liverpool FC, already scoring 10 goals in 13 games. The Reds are not scheduled to play in the Premier League until Nov. 22. However, Salah is unlikely to be available for that match, giving Jurgen Klopp more things to worry about.

Klopp is already in a hole as several other players are unavailable. Already out for the Reds are Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Fabinho, CNN reported. Thiago and Sadio Mane are also in self-isolation after both contracted the coronavirus.

This development also comes not long after Salah was spotted attending his brother's wedding in Cairo during the international break. Footage showed the 28-year-old dancing with guests multiple times without a mask. It was not mentioned if Salah had contracted the coronavirus during that event.

Aside from the Reds' game with The Foxes, Salah is also likely to miss the club’s Champions League clash with Atalanta set for Nov. 25.

"I really don't want to sound disrespectful as we don't know too much about what other countries are doing, but everyone in this moment wants family around you," Klopp said. "You want to keep your players. I'm not saying this is the safest place in the world but it's the place we know, at least. We know how to deal with the different situations and scenarios."
