KEY POINTS

  • Fabinho joined Liverpool in 2018 from Monaco
  • He was a key member of Liverpool's title-winning squad in 2019-20
  • Liverpool are next set to face Midtjylland Wednesday

Liverpool FC are reportedly preparing a contract extension for defender Fabinho, who is considered to be one of the "untouchables" at the club for an impressive run since his Premier League debut in 2018.

The new deal will also see Fabinho receive a massive pay raise.

Fabinho, 27, who has made 95 competitive appearances for Liverpool since his arrival from Monaco two years back, could be offered a new deal that would keep the Brazilian at Anfield until 2025 or 2026, while the defensive midfielder is also expected to be rewarded with a hefty pay rise, The Guardian reported. The Brazil national earns nearly $134,000-a-week, but the wage raise would see Fabinho be included with the bunch of players that are just underneath the top earners at Liverpool.

In the ongoing campaign, Fabinho has played in Liverpool’s central defense for the majority of the time because of injuries to Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez.

At the end of the title-winning season, Liverpool sold center-back Dejan Lovren to Russian club Zenit St Petersburg for $14 million. Because of the financial crisis infused by the coronavirus pandemic, Jurgen Klopp was not given a free hand to make big signings at the 2020 summer transfer window. As a result, Klopp had decided not to sign Lovren’s replacement for the 2020-21 season.

Before the start of the ongoing campaign, it was reported that Klopp had asked Fabinho to cover at the backline whenever it would be needed. Little did he know, the Premier League champions were going to have an injury-hit season.

The Reds currently are without van Dijk, Gomez, Thiago Alcantara, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, and Xherdan Shaqiri, since all of them are recovering from different injuries. Earlier this season, even Fabinho was sidelined for a brief time due to a hamstring injury along with another center-back Joel Matip. Fortunately for Klopp, the duo soon returned to action. Matip even scored in Liverpool’s latest 4-0 win over Wolves in the Premier League.

Liverpool’s next fixture is a home Champions League game against Midtjylland Wednesday.
