While combat sports have been around for centuries, its popularity has skyrocketed in the last few decades.
As it turns out, people find themselves tuning in to people going against each other in intense physical competition.
Because of this attention, combat sports have evolved into many different forms.
While there are more traditional ones like boxing and Muay Thai, modern combat sports are perhaps best characterized by mixed martial arts (MMA), arguably the fastest-growing hand-to-hand competition in the world today.
There have been other forms of combat sports that are more on the unorthodox and unusual side such as team-based MMA fights, medieval fights, extreme arm wrestling, hybrid MMA-basketball matches, and slap-fighting.
Interestingly enough, slap-fighting has become one of the more popular spin-offs in combat sports in the past few years.
Over the last few weeks, it has gotten even more traction, for better or worse.
The latest slap-fighting clip to go viral shows one of the competitors sporting a disturbingly-swollen face, yet still continuing to compete.
The competition in question is RXF Slap, which appears to be the slap-fighting division of RXF, an MMA promotion out of Romania.
The man, whose face has become severely deformed and swollen, is named Comsa Sorin.
According to the RXF's Instagram account, he was the tournament's big winner.
Per the caption, Sorin endured the tournament—which included a ten-round semifinal matchup—to win the €5000 ($5409.90) grand prize and an intricately-crafted championship belt.
For reference, here's the photo of Sorin that the league used in its promotional materials.
This is how he looks without a swollen face.
As outlandish as the concept may be, the truth is that slap-fighting competitions have been around for quite a while now, even in the United States.
The competition, which is said to have originated in Russia among strongmen, adheres to a pretty straightforward ruleset that involves two people slapping each other until one gets knocked out or quits.
In 2017, the SlapFIGHT Championship league was founded and appears to be going strong until today.
In 2022, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Logan Paul teamed up with an organization named PunchDown! to create the Slap Fighting Championship.
The most recent person to get into the slap-fighting business is none other than UFC -president Dana White, who helped bring to life the Power Slap League.
The Power Slap League is now licensed and sanctioned by the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC).
The Power Slap League is set to debut this Wednesday, January 18th on TBS, and it comes at quite an inopportune time given that White was recently involved in a domestic slapping incident with his wife.
