  • A McDonald's and Dairy Queen in Missouri started a sign war
  • Other businesses in the area joined the exchange
  • The Marshfield Area Chamber of Commerce has documented the sign war

Marshfield, Missouri -- What started as a challenge between a local McDonald's and Dairy Queen has escalated into a full-blown sign war involving several other fast-food restaurants in the area.

The exchange began when a local McDonald's wrote, "Hey DQ (Dairy Queen)! Wanna have a sign war?" Business Insider reported.

In response to the question, the nearby Dairy Queen wrote, "We would, but we're too busy making ice cream" on their sign.

"That's cute. Our ice cream makes itself," McDonald's answered back.

The Dairy Queen then replied, "You mean it actually works? Shocker."

Ice cream machines in McDonald's stores are notorious for frequently experiencing malfunctions, with the problem becoming so prevalent that a website tracking working machines exists.

Not to be one-upped by their fast-food competitor, McDonald's called Dairy Queen's jab "salty like our world-famous fries."

Dairy Queen later proceeded to write a message about McDonald's mascot, Ronald McDonald.

"Why dine with a clown when you can with a queen?" one of Dairy Queen's signs read.

Various local businesses, including a local Mexican restaurant and an employment agency, soon joined the sign war.

The Facebook page for the Marshfield Area Chamber of Commerce documenting the exchange between the two branches has been sharing photos of new entries daily.

"Hot and crispy fries don't arch," a Wendy's in the area wrote on its sign in an apparent dig at McDonald's.

The store also called out its competition's cooking practices, asking McDonald's, "How long does it take to thaw frozen beef?"

Wendy's advertises its beef as "fresh" and "never frozen."

The local Domino's also joined in the sign war, writing, "Your signs are cheesy, just like our pizza!"

A Sonic branch wrote, "My milkshake brings all the cars to the yard," on its sign, apparently referencing the famous lyrics of the 2003 single "Milkshake" by singer Kelis.

The drive-thru also wrote, "We have ice for these burns!"

An Arvest Bank in the area also participated in the sign war, but the establishment opted to observe rather than pick a fight with the other businesses.

"Just CHECKING in on the sign war," the bank wrote.

Gault & Co. Realty had a similar idea, writing, "Sign war? We're just here for the show."
