This weekend, news broke out that "Lord of the Rings" actor Sir Ian Holm had passed away. People who were fans of his films were devastated. Online, players of the "Lord of the Rings" free MMO game got together to pay their final respects to the man who was Bilbo Baggins.

LOTR players from across different servers banded together to give their own tributes, PC GamesN reported. There are hundreds of players who took part, recreating small gatherings such as those seen in the movies. There were some who shared hikes together and traveled across the online space. A Dwarven rendition of "Enya" was also in the online, in-game memorial.

The game also has a non-player character of Bilbo Baggins in the Hall of Fire in Rivendell Valley. Three hundred players in the Evernight server converged on the spot and the soundtrack "Misty Mountains" provided a somber dirge to the solemn event. Users voiced out their approval of the act, with one even saying that the game community was to be commended for such an act.

The online players were only some of those who bade the actor goodbye for the last time, in their own way. According to FTW USA Today, celebrities and other fans alike were quick to share bits and pieces of their own experiences with the famed actor.

On Twitter, actors Elijah Wood and Richard Armitage shared their messages for the late actor. Elijah Wood played alongside Holm in the franchise, where he portrayed Frodo Baggins, Bilbo's nephew. Armitage, meanwhile, will be better known Thorin Oakenshield, one of the protagonists of "The Hobbit" trilogy, which also had a younger Bilbo Baggins.

"The Lord of the Rings" wasn't the only fictional work that the late actor participated in. He was "Ash" in Ridley Scott's "Alien;" Napoleon in "Time Bandits;" Sam Mussabini in "Chariots of Fire," and Fr. Vito Cornelius in the 1997 sci-fi film "The Fifth Element." Even then, for these fans, he will be best remembered for his portrayal of the noble Bad-End hobbit.
