Beginning Friday night, the city of Los Angeles is preparing to face one of the biggest road congestion of all times, dubbed rightly as Carmageddon.
This is due to the 53-hours blockage of the 10 miles stretch of Interstate 405 which is regarded as the busiest and most congested freeway in the United States.
The route, passing along the western areas of the Greater Los Angeles, is a major connection to a number of points of commercial and recreational interests. This includes the Los Angeles International Airport, California States Universities and Marina del Rey.
This major traffic artery in the city is frequented by an estimated number of 500,000 vehicles during a weekend.
As there are no alternate routes, transportation officials have issued a warning of severe congestion involving hours of delay.
The closure will begin at around 7pm on July 15, 2011 and will continue till 5 am Monday morning.
