A student shot another student near Santee High School in Los Angeles on Thursday, following an in-school fight.

The shooting occured after school was dismissed early, and reportedly it was the student who lost the fight that pulled a gun on the other.

The incident took place around 2:00 p.m. and the victim, who was shot the leg, was transported to a hospital. A statement from the Los Angeles School Police Management Association said the victim’s injuries were not life-threatening, KNBC reported. The shooting incident sent the school, located at 1921 Maple Avenue, east of the 110 and south of the 10 Freeway, into temporary lockdown as officers searched the perimeter.

In an update, the LA School Police said an officer was patroling the Santee High School after an early dismissal call when he was notified of the shooting “in front of the school adjacent to the football field.” President of the Los Angeles School Police Association, Gil Gamez, said “two kids get into a fight, the loser of the fight produces a gun and shoots the other individual, hits them in the right leg.” Gamez noted that while fighting is “somewhat normal,” it is prohibited to carry a gun in school.

The suspect’s identity is yet to be known. Police only described him as Hispanic with tattoos on one arm and short, tapered hair. He was reportedly last seen wearing green shoes and dark blue clothes. The LA School Police also posted on Twitter that the suspect is believed to have escaped in a black sedan but his escape route is still unknown.
