Now a former cop, a 28-year-old man from Kaplan, La., was arrested on multiple counts of sexual misconduct against children, the state attorney general said.

Casey Huffman, once a police officer in the state’s Vermillion Parish, was arrested on 12 counts of sex crimes committed against children, including two counts of producing illicit material involving children under the age of 13 and three counts of first-degree rape of children under the age of 13.

“Crimes against children are some of the most heinous acts imaginable, and they are even more despicable when perpetrated by people in authority who are supposed to be protecting kids,” Attorney General Jeff Landry said in a statement.

Huffman was arrested following a joint investigation carried about by state and local authorities and booked in the parish jail. Kaplan Police Chief Josh Hardy told local NBC affiliate KATC on Friday that Huffman was arrested the previous day and “no longer works for my department."

Sexual misconduct charges against children have been a high-profile issue, particularly sex trafficking as #SaveTheChildren trends on social media platforms. More than 30 children were rescued last month from a sex-trafficking ring in nearby Georgia during “Operation Not Forgotten.”

It was not known when Huffman will appear in court.
