A principal at Summerfield High School in a Louisiana town of that same name has been arrested and charged with 49 sex crimes against students.
WAFB 9 reports that 54-year-old Brian Briggs was taken into police custody on Thursday. He is being charged with 46 counts of indecent behavior with a juvenile, one count of computer-aided solicitation of a minor, prohibited sexual conduct between an educator and a student, and production of pornography involving juveniles.
Briggs, who is currently being held at Claiborne Parish Detention Center on $1 million bail, first became the subject of investigation when concerned parents alerted authorities that he had acted inappropriately toward their children on a social media website.
It was eventually discovered that Briggs used the internet to engage in sexually explicit conversations, send sexually explicit materials and request inappropriate images, according to a statement from Trooper First Class Brent Hardy.
A warrant was then issued for Briggs’ arrest and to search his home and computer to examine his social media activity. The scope of the investigation is ongoing even though he is in custody. Authorities are still urging anyone else who Briggs might have engaged with to come forward.
William Kennedy, Superintendent of Claiborne School District, Briggs employer, released the following statement:
“Claiborne Parish School Board is shocked and saddened to hear about the arrest made today. We are working cooperatively with the Louisiana State Police in the investigation. Because this is a personnel issue, the district is unable to provide any further details. As always, the safety and well-being of our students and staff are our top priority.”
There was no immediate word whether or not the district had taken steps to formally terminate Briggs, or if he is represented by counsel in the aforesaid charges. If convicted, he faces the possibility of life in prison.
