Louisiana Man Caught On Camera Choking Ex-Girlfriend's Dog With Leash, Then Steals The Canine
A man in Slidell, Louisiana, was arrested on charges of animal cruelty after he was caught on camera choking his ex-girlfriend’s pet dog.
The incident came to light Monday (May 11) after the owner of the canine, identified as Rachelle Fassy, took to Facebook to share the video of the abuse. The video, caught on the woman’s doorbell camera, showed her ex-boyfriend, identified as 30-year-old Shane Mitchell, yanking up the three-year-old Doberman’s leash and choking the animal.
It was revealed that the woman moved into her new place following a “bad” breakup with the man. Mitchell showed up at her new home on Mother’s Day. Following the abuse, he took away the dog, named Ruby Jean.
"I didn't call police until later that day. He kept telling me he would bring her back. But by Mother's Day night, I just knew I wasn't getting her back. She was basically being held for ransom, because I didn't want to be with him,” she said.
Meanwhile, in a Facebook post Tuesday, Slidell Police Department announced that they arrested the man and that the canine was reunited with its owner.
“Slidell Police were notified early Monday morning and immediately opened an investigation into the matter. Based off the video, Slidell Police detectives secured an arrest warrant for Mr. Mitchell for Cruelty to Animals. A court order was also secured ordering the canine, Rubyjean, back to her rightful owner,” the post said.
“Investigators received information that Mr. Mitchell may have been at an apartment complex in Slidell or fled to the Baton Rouge area. Mitchell refused to cooperate with authorities, so several undercover detectives set up surveillance in an attempt to locate Mitchell. Shortly before 11:00 a.m. this morning, Mitchell was located at an apartment complex on Oak Harbor Boulevard and was taken into custody without incident. Police located Rubyjean safe and sound and reunited the canine with her rightful owner,” the post added. The accused was being held at the Slidell City Jail.
Speaking about the incident, Slidell Police Chief Randy Fandal said, “I was sick to my stomach watching that video. How someone can do hurt a defenseless animal is beyond me. I had the opportunity to meet Rubyjean this afternoon, and she was as sweet and well-mannered as could be. We are glad this had a happy ending for both the dog and her owner.”
