KEY POINTS

  • Low visibility is expected in a large portion of Arkansas
  • Dense fog is expected to affect marine waters in the Mississippi Gulf Coast
  • Officials warned that fog may linger longer on water, making boat travel difficult

Low visibility in eight states has resulted in Dense Fog Advisories that will last through Tuesday morning.

Officials have warned citizens to take extra caution when driving or traveling by boat.

The National Weather Service (NWS) in New Orleans, Louisiana said residents living along the Mississippi Gulf Coast should be "careful" during their morning commute, noting that low visibility is expected to affect "the protected marine waters of the MS Coast."

Officials are expecting "patchy dense fog leading to reduced visibilities to ½ to ¼ mile on land or less than 1 NM over water."

The office previously reiterated that "fog safety is an important part of safe boating," adding that fog may linger longer while on water, so it is best for boat travelers to slow down and listen for any sounds to prevent untoward events.

The NWS in Little Rock, Arkansas, also urged residents to "use extreme caution if traveling tonight or early Tuesday" due to reduced visibility.

In Idaho, the NWS in Boise said that while foggy conditions in affected areas improved as of Monday afternoon, "dense fog is expected to redevelop after sunset and persist through Tuesday morning."

The NWS issues a Dense Fog Advisory when widespread dense fog develops in affected areas. During such events, visibilities "frequently drop to one-quarter of a mile or less," making travel difficult.
