Lower Blood Sugar With The Help Of This Powerful Cereal For Breakfast
A powerful cereal grain for breakfast may be the solution that many Type 2 diabetes sufferers have been looking for, thanks to its capability to lower blood sugar levels.
What better way to start the day than to devour a chockfull of nutrients in the morning to arrest the possibility of rising blood sugar levels during the day.
A study in Sweden by Lund University showed that barley possesses certain properties that could help diabetes sufferers by lowering blood sugar levels.
Those who don’t suffer from diabetes also benefit from barley since it helps reduce their risk of acquiring the condition.
According to the study, barley has a special mixture of fibers which help in reducing blood sugar levels.
Aside from this, the same set of fibers also reduces that appetite of individuals, and at the same time abates the risk for heart diseases.
According to one of the researchers, Anne Nilsson, Food for Health Science Centre Associate Professor, “It is surprising yet promising that choosing the right blend of dietary fibers can - in a short period of time - generate such remarkable health benefits.”
Participants in the Lund University study were healthy middle-aged men and women. For three days, participants ate bread made out of barley kernels in every meal, including breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
Counting 11 to 4 hours from their last meal, they were tested for risk factors for cardiovascular diseases and diabetes.
It was found that the participants showed a huge improvement in metabolism. This lasted for 14 hours.
Aside from this, participants showed decreased blood sugar levels. Their insulin sensitivity increased, and their appetite control also improved.
What the researchers saw was that consumption of barley increased the gut hormones, which regulate metabolism. This then increased low-grade inflammation, eventually preventing the risk of diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.
A separate study also conducted in Sweden by the University of Gothenburg found that the gut bacteria prevotella copri is increased through eating barley kernels, thereby helping blood sugar levels to decrease.
It is not only those who already have Type 2 diabetes who can benefit from eating barley. Since Type 2 is primarily brought about by an unhealthy lifestyle, those who do not suffer from this condition can likewise eat barley to reduce their risk for diabetes.
