Film director Baz Luhrmann is renowned for his Red Curtain Trilogy, which gave the world the films Strictly Ballroom, William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet, and Moulin Rouge.
He has received and been nominated for several awards for his work. Moulin Rouge was nominated for Best Picture at the 2002 Oscars and BAFTA's, a film that was described by the BBC as a feast for the senses.
His interpretation of the Shakespearean play Romeo and Juliet won the BAFTA for Best Adapted Screenplay in 1998. Luhrmann and his two bright angels have shaken up a 400-year-old play without losing its touching, poetic innocence, Rolling Stone wrote, referring to the leads of Leonardo Dicaprio and Claire Danes.
With The Great Gatsby, Luhrmann is adapting a classic American novel for film. He will have the responsibility of recreating the decadence associated with the Roaring Twenties.
A big part of the undertaking will involve what the actors can contribute. Here is a look at the seven main characters of the famous novel and the actors who will portray them.
