‘Luke Is The Last Jedi' Says 'Star Wars: Episode 8' Director

Since the subtitle for Star Wars: Episode 8, The Last Jedi, was revealed in January the parsing has been unrelenting. What or who is the last Jedi in this formulation? Is it the last Jedi organization? Could Jedi be plural, making both Rey and Luke Skywalker the last Jedi? Many sources were scried, including foreign translations of the title. For example, Os Últimos Jedi is plural.

The debut of the first Star Wars: The Last Jedi teaser trailer added a new wrinkle. The last line is Luke Skywalker’s and it’s a doozy: “I only know one truth: it’s time for the Jedi to end.” This would seem to confirm that Luke Skywalker is that last Jedi and that Rey, however Luke may train her, will be something different than a Jedi. But trailers have been deceptive before, perhaps this isn’t definitive.

The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson just made it definitive.

Appearing on Good Morning America, Johnson said, “in my mind it’s singular.”

Not only that, but the last Jedi is definitely Luke. “They say in The Force Awakens he’s going to find the last Jedi temple and Luke’s the last... ” here Johnson dropped to a mumble, “... Luke’s the last Jedi.”

Of course — since nothing can be simple — there’s one super strange part of his answer. Ahch-To, the planet where Rey finds Luke at the end of The Force Awakens, is supposed to be the site of the first Jedi temple, not the last. Johnson probably just misspoke. Probably.
