  • Apple recently introduced the Battery Health Management feature for MacBooks
  • The feature helps extend the MacBook battery's lifespan
  • It can be disabled so that it won't interfere with the user's charging habits

Apple introduced a new feature for MacBooks called Battery Health Management. This feature, which comes with the recently released macOS 10.15.5, works to extend the MacBook battery's lifespan so that users can still get the most out of it in the long run. That said, the feature does have its downsides which users might not like.

As reported previously, Apple designed the Battery Health Management feature to help slow down the chemical aging process that the MacBook battery goes through. It is also designed so that it can help users know when to get their MacBook battery serviced or replaced.

Why the feature?

MacBook batteries chemically age depending on certain factors which include discharging and recharging patterns, as well as temperature levels. Battery Health Management will help slow down the aging process by doing two things:

  • First, it will monitor the user's battery charging habits. This will include keeping track of battery percentage when users tend to plug the charger, the frequency or times that a user plugs the MacBook to charge, and the overall battery temperature.
  • Second, Battery Health Management will then control charging depending on the user's charging habits. For example, if it observes that the user tends to plug the MacBook at all times, it will not allow the battery to be charged beyond 80% to prevent the battery from degrading fast. It can also slow down charging speeds so that the battery won't get hotter than it should.

How to turn it off

As mentioned, the feature will help prolong battery lifespan but it will have some downsides to it. One of these is that the feature could prevent the battery from being fully charged, which will mean shorter battery life in one single use. Those who frequently go out to work will want their MacBooks fully charged and ready for use.

Thankfully, users can turn Battery Health Management off so that it won't mess with their charging habits. Here's how to do it:

  • First, users should make sure that their MacBook is running on macOS 10.15.5 (those running older versions don't need to worry about it).
  • Second, users should go to Settings > Energy Saver
  • Third, once there, users should click on Battery Health, located at the bottom of the Energy Saver window. A dialog box will appear, allowing users to turn Battery health management off.
