Apple has released macOS Catalina, the latest macOS version that brings a slew of features and changes to how Macs, MacBooks and iMacs are used. The new operating system splits the long-running iTunes app into three distinct apps, allows users to turn their iPads into secondary displays, and more.

Interested in getting that Mac or MacBook updated to macOS Catalina? Here’s a quick guide on how to download and install Apple’s latest macOS version.

Check for compatibility

macOS Catalina is compatible with devices capable of running macOS Mojave. Devices unable to run the older OS version won’t be able to run Catalina as well. Here’s a short list of compatible Apple devices:

  • MacBook: MacBook 2015 and later, MacBook Air 2012 or later, MacBook Pro 2012 or later
  • Mac: Mac Mini 2012 or later, Mac Pro 2013 or later
  • iMac: iMac 2012 or later, iMac Pro 2017 or later

Those who are unsure about the Mac model they have can proceed to the Apple menu then choose “About This Mac.” The Overview tab indicates the Mac model.

Preparing for Catalina

After checking for compatibility, prepare the Mac for Catalina by doing these things:

  • Backup. Make sure to backup files and content on the Mac’s drive using the built-in Time Machine backup utility or other backup apps such as Carbon Copy Cloner, CNet recommended.
  • Apple ID. An Apple ID is needed for the Cataline setup process as well as logging onto iCloud. Those who don’t have one are advised to get one.
  • Storage Space. Apple recommends that users should have at least 20GB storage space in order to install Catalina.
  • Updates. Apple ends support for 32-bit apps with Catalina. Those who want to get the latest macOS version are advised to make sure that the apps they use are 64-bit versions. 32-bit apps need to be replaced.

Download and Install

Once preparations are complete, users can simply proceed to downloading and installing Catalina on their Apple devices. Here’s how:

  • Head to the Mac App Store and check if Catalina is available for download. “Catalina” will be listed if it is available for download. Otherwise, search for “Catalina” in the store to see it.
  • If Catalina isn’t visible in the store, proceed to the Apple Menu on the Mac and choose “About This Mac.” Click on “Software Update” to see if Catalina appears. If not, then Apple might be releasing staggered updates.
  • If it appears in the Store or the Software Update option, click on Update or “Get” to download it.
  • Follow installation prompts to install Catalina on the device
