Maddie Ziegler On Chloe Lukasiak Friendship: 'Things Have Changed Between Us,' Says 'Dance Moms' Star
When Chloe Lukasiak exited “Dance Moms” in the Season 4 finale the young stars of the Lifetime reality series returned the following season and shared with viewers that they were no longer in contact with their former teammate. In a new interview with Lifetime, as part of her Throwback Tuesday “Dance Moms” special, Maddie Ziegler dished on her current relationship with Chloe.
While Maddie, 12, touched on everything from her newfound music video career to her relationship with coach Abby Lee Miller, it’s her comments on her friendship with Chloe, 14, getting the most buzz.
When asked to speak out about Chloe’s absence from the show — viewers will remember she parted ways with the show and Abby in October 2014 — Maddie admitted she is no longer close with her former co-star. “We haven’t really talked to each other and things have changed between us,” she said. “It’s really sad because I obviously miss her.”
Maddie’s mother, Melissa Gisoni, shared a different opinion. She claimed her daughter is still “very good friends” with Chloe.

While Maddie said being away from Chloe was not the best situation, commenting on how she missed her most recent birthday on May 25, she did reveal that she still has good friends on the show. “It’s definitely hard for us because we’re not with our friends anymore. But I’ve realized that all my best friends are right with me,” she said. Maddie listed co-stars Kalani Hilliker, Kendall Vertes and Nia Frazier as some of her closest buddies.
Despite no longer considering Chloe one of her besties, it’s a strong possibility the duo will run into one another next month at the 2015 Teen Choice Awards. Maddie and Chloe are both nominated in the Choice Dancer category.
In the special, which premiered Tuesday, Maddie also opening up about her previous rivalry with Chloe on the show. While the Maddie vs. Chloe competition was a frequent point of contention among the dance moms — mainly Chloe’s mother, Christi Lukasiak — Maddie says it only gave her fuel to better herself.
“That’s kind of what started to get me kind of nervous and more competitive,” Maddie shared when speaking about their speculated rivalry. “I definitely am always supportive of my friends and if they win, that’s fine, I’m happy for them. But I always want to do my best and I always want to win.”
Maddie gave more insight into their purported friction, saying Abby was the source of some of the drama. “I think that everyone was so obsessed with the Maddie vs. Chloe thing is because Abby... showed most of her attention to us two and I feel like that’s what happened,” Maddie explained.
According to Melissa, it was the moms, not the girls, who caused the competition. “I love the fact when they say the fact there’s rivalry,” Melissa said. “I think the world just likes controversy… It was a mom thing. It wasn’t the kids, but the moms influence [on] the kids."
"Dance Moms" airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m. EDT on Lifetime.
