KEY POINTS

- The first season of the Cristin Milioti-starrer received rave reviews
“Made For Love” is coming back with a sophomore installment after HBO Max announced the renewal of the dark comedy.
The Cristin Milioti-starrer just launched in April, but it’s now been confirmed to return for another run after receiving rave reviews from both critics and fans, The Hollywood Reporter revealed Monday.
In a statement to the entertainment news outlet, the WarnerMedia-backed streamer said that it is “thrilled” to bring back the cast and crew of the show for another season.
“‘Made for Love’ is funny, dark, and entirely unique. We are thrilled to be reuniting with this dream team of talented producers, incredible cast, and CGI dolphins to tell the next chapter of this exciting story,” HBO Max VP for comedy and adult animation Suzanna Makkos said in the statement.
Based on the novel by Alissa Nutting, the half-hour series stars Milioti, Ray Romano, Billy Magnussen, Noma Dumezweni, Patti Harrison and Dan Bakkedahl, among others.
The show revolves around Milioti’s character, a thirtysomething woman who is on the run after suffering at the hands of her controlling tech billionaire husband for about 10 years. Unfortunately, a Made for Love chip has been implanted in her brain without her knowing it, and it has allowed her husband to monitor her every move.
Since its launch, the show managed to accumulate a 94% critical score and 80% audience score on the review site Rotten Tomatoes.
Christina Lee served as the showrunner for the first season. But for the second installment, Nutting will join Lee as co-showrunner.
The renewal comes about a month after Lee disclosed via the “TV’s Top 5” podcast that they strategically wrote the ending for the first season to catch the attention of the viewers and excite them for what’s to come next.
“We wrote an ending that I hope the audience will want to see what’s next. But it is a resolution in terms of two primary relationships in the show: Hazel (Milioti) and Byron (Magnussen) and Hazel and Herbert (Romano). There’s emotional resolution at the end of the show that story-wise doesn’t have to stop there,” the showrunner said.
Following the renewal news, Lee and Nutting released a joint statement saying they are excited to continue working with the cast and crew of the show.
Although HBO Max has already announced the confirmation that the series is coming back on the air, it has not yet provided the specific return date.
