A former convict caught on camera slashing a traditionally dressed Hassidic couple and their 1-year-old child in lower Manhattan has been arrested, police said.

Video footage of the incident showed 30-year-old Darryl Jones holding an umbrella and walking past the young Orthodox Jewish couple pushing their baby in a stroller on State Street near Battery Park on Wednesday afternoon before turning around and attacking them with a blade, the New York Post reported.

In the video, the assailant can be seen slashing the father, 23, on the forehead and the mother, 22, on the lip. The couple was caught by surprise and was pushed away from the stroller. Their attacker then proceeds to stab the baby, wounding her on the chin, police said.

The family of three attempts to flee, but Jones is seen in the video chasing after them.

Police caught Jones a short time later. The knife he used in the attack was recovered in a garbage can near the scene, New York Daily News reported.

First responders treated all three victims for minor cuts. The family declined any further medical attention.

"I feel horrified," the woman said, per NY Daily News. "This is such a horrible hate crime. There were more people in that park, but he came to attack us because we are Jewish."

She added, "It's shocking that such things could happen to Jews in America."

The Orthodox Jewish family wished to remain anonymous but said they were from Belgium and were visiting family in Brooklyn.

Jones was ranting during the attack, but the victims pointed out to police that he did not say anything anti-Semitic.

Police said Jones was charged with three counts of assault, assault on a person less than 7 years old, three counts of criminal possession of a weapon and criminal possession of a controlled substance.

Jones, who lives in New York City Housing Authority's Grant Houses, was on parole when he was arrested. He was released last month after serving several years for attempted murder and attempted assault.
