Madonna Fans Upset After Lizzo Names Janet Jackson ‘Queen Of Pop’
KEY POINTS
- Lizzo named Janet Jackson the "Queen of Pop"
- The title has long been associated to music icon Madonna
- Lizzo's tweet earned negative reactions from Madonna's fans
Grammy-winning Lizzo has caused a stir online as she weighed in on the King and Queen of Pop debate. The 33-year-old rapper received immediate backlash Sunday after dubbing Janet Jackson as the Queen of Pop — a title long associated with Madonna.
Lizzo dished her rankings after Justin Bieber was crowned as the Prince of Pop by his fans after breaking a record on Spotify. The male singer reigned as king of music streaming after raking in a massive 83.3 million average listeners each month, breaking the record previously set by Ariana Grande.
Following Bieber’s new milestone, Lizzo took to Twitter to concur, saying the 27-year-old artist is indeed the Prince of Pop. She also named Michael Jackson the King of Pop, Britney Spears the Princess of Pop, Rihanna as Pop Princess and Beyonce the Queen of Music.
However, Lizzo threw a wrench in things big time when she crowned Janet Jackson as the Queen of Pop. For decades, Madonna has been right alongside Michael Jackson on the pop throne. As expected, Lizzo’s declaration was met with a major pushback from Madonna’s fans, who had to interject and point out Madonna is the Queen of Pop.
While Lizzo was simply pointing out her opinion and none of the titles she mentioned was official, fans of Madonna told the rapper their idol has long claimed the “Queen of Pop” title for herself as she had done a lot for the genre in her heyday.
“She’s worse than Twitter stans. Like how can a singer disrespect MADONNA like that, she made the industry easier for women, her music DNA is visible to singers of today, even L*zzo herself has a Madonna reference in her own video, sad,” one fan responded.
“She’s not even on the top 20 best-selling female artists, she can’t sell tickets, hasn’t had a hit in decades. So how is she the queen of pop? You guys smoke nylon,” another Madonna fan tweeted.
The arguments got so heated that both “Bieber” and “Queen of Pop” started trending on Twitter. Lizzo seemed to have taken notice of this, prompting her to share a screenshot of the trending topics and captioning her post, “Ruhruoh.”
Janet, who is a member of the iconic Jackson music family, has carved out a niche in the pop scene for many years. On top of her five Grammy Awards, she has sold over 180 million records throughout her career.
