Madonna surprised her fans at New York City’s Stonewall Inn by first giving a speech and then singing two songs during the New Year’s Eve party. She was joined by her 13-year-old adopted son, David Banda, who played his acoustic guitar while she sang.

According to Variety, Madonna arrived at Stone Wall Inn after midnight. She was reportedly sporting a monochromatic look with black shirt, jeans and jacket. Her accessories included glittering chains and a shiny bow in her hair. The singer joked that she had never performed at such a small stage before, while the crowd cheered.

In her speech, Madonna spoke about the struggles the LGBTQ community faced over the years. She also spoke about how she began her journey in New York City and added that this is the place where her “commitment to equality took root.”

Madonna asked the crowd to think about the ways in which they can bring “more love and peace” in 2019. She explained that this is what they are fighting for. She also remembered the Stonewall Riots and added that the establishment has become “ a defining moment and a critical point in history” half a century after the riots.

Stonewall Inn is seen as the place where the gay rights movement began in 1969. According to TMZ, the police, at the time, raided the establishment and arrested the patrons there. Madonna posted a picture on Twitter of a sign by the police that let people known back then that this was a raided premises.

After the speech, Madonna sang “Like a Prayer,” which is one of her own songs. Later, she sang Elvis Presley’s 1961 song “Can’t Help Falling In Love.” Pictures and videos taken by the fans have been circulating on the internet.

According to a report by USA Today, Madonna’s performance comes just one month after she was named a Stonewall Ambassador. The announcement was made just before the establishment’s 50th anniversary.

Madonna posted a video on Twitter of her getting ready for the Stonewall event backstage. She can be seen getting her makeup done, while her son practiced with his guitar. She also posted a black and white picture of her performance on Twitter. She tagged the picture with the word “pride” and wrote that it had been an “unforgettable” New Year’s Eve.

In a previous post on Twitter, Madonna expressed her gratitude as she prepared to step into the New Year. “ Wild is the World and Lonely is the Path...” she wrote in a message to the fans.
