KEY POINTS

  • Malik Beasley averaged 21 points and five rebounds last season
  • The Timberwolves rewarded him with a four-year contract
  • Beasley was spotted hanging out with Larsa Pippen in Miami

Malik Beasley signed a new long-term deal in the offseason to stay with the Minnesota Timberwolves. If things go his way, the new season could be his breakout year.

Beasley was drafted by the Denver Nuggets with the 19th overall pick in 2016 and played for the franchise for three years. In the 2019-20 season, he was part of a trade that involved the Houston Rockets, Atlanta Hawks and the Timberwolves. He earned a total of $6.7 million from the Nuggets, but the extension he signed with Minnesota is the biggest contract of his career so far.

The shooting guard out of Florida State decided to play backup to All-Star Karl-Anthony Towns until 2024, signing a four-year, $60 million deal. When the contract expires, he would have earned a total of $80.6 million, Spotrac reported.

He has shown his capabilities when given the minutes on the court as evidenced by the spike in his production last season: almost 21 points to go with five rebounds per game. Beasley made around four threes per game, which improved from connecting on just one three-point attempt in Denver. His improved outside sniping can help space the floor when the defense collapses on Towns or All-Star teammate D’Angelo Russell.

The Timberwolves are still rebuilding their roster and have added former point guard Ricky Rubio. The team is looking to enter the postseason with the new signings, with Towns and Russell spearheading the offense.

However, the four-year veteran recently had a run-in with authorities in Minnesota, ESPN reported. He is facing felony weapons and drug charges after he was arrested in September.

Adding to his controversies are the photos of him hanging out with Scottie Pippen’s ex-wife, Larsa Pippen that recently surfaced. TMZ reported that the two were caught holding hands while walking in Miami on Nov. 23.

Sources "close" to Beasley's wife, Montana Yao, told TMZ Sports that she had been blindsided by the photos and had been expecting him to return home for his 24th birthday on Nov. 26.

It has not been revealed how serious the relationship is between Beasley and Pippen and if the controversy will end his marriage with Yao. However, the model has since taken to Instagram Stories after the Timberwolves swingman was caught cheating on her, posting four cryptic messages.

"I've always and will forever remain true to who I am and God has never let me down. The truth always comes out one way or another..." she wrote, before adding in another post, "Appreciate all the love y'all for real."

Yao also shared photos of their son, Makai, along with the message, "I got you and you got me."
