An Indiana man accidentally shot himself in the genitals with an unlicensed handgun while out for a morning walk. Police said in a statement that the incident took place last week and the 46-year-old was hospitalized.

Mark Anthony Jones told authorities he was carrying the gun in his waistband while standing on a walkway near a Girl Scout cabin in Marion. Jones told police that when he “reached down to adjust” the unholstered gun, it discharged, shooting a bullet that “entered just above his penis and exited his scrotum.”

According to the Marion Police Department news release posted on Facebook, the case was forwarded to the Grant County prosecuting attorney. It remains unclear if Jones will face any criminal charges for the self-inflicted wound.

This is not the first time such an incident has taken place. Last month, a Houston man was taken to the hospital after he accidentally shot himself in the stomach at his daughter's 16th birthday party in northeast Harris County. Police said that the man was spinning the gun with his hand and inadvertently set it off.

In another bizarre case, Ellenville Police responded to a call about a rabid animal. They discovered a rabid fox that later charged at the officers. Unable to shoot the rabid animal due to the close proximity of the other officers, Officer Herald Nunuvero jumped a nearby fence to escape and accidentally discharged his gun which struck him in the chest.

In another similar incident last year November, a man accidentally shot himself in the groin area while inside a Buckeye Walmart in Arizona. In this case also, the man's semiautomatic handgun began to slip as he carried it unholstered in the waistband of his sweatpants. The man told police that when he tried to reposition his loaded gun and keep it from falling, he shot himself in the groin area.
