A Los Angeles man was arrested after reportedly assaulting a man wearing a “MAGA” cap that was written in Russian.

The incident originally occurred on Sept. 2 when David Delgado, 32, approached another man in the restroom of Tower 12 restaurant in Hermosa Beach, California. Delgado noticed the man wearing a red hat with Russian writing on it and asked what it meant. The unnamed man revealed it translated to President Trump’s 2016 campaign slogan, “Make America Great Again.”

“MAGA” hats written in Russian became an internet sensation after Alec Baldwin posted a picture of himself wearing a similar hat in 2017. Baldwin, who is an outspoken opponent of Trump and portrays him on “Saturday Night Live,” made the post in reference to the alleged Russian interference and aid that won Trump the White House in 2016.

Delgado allegedly punched the man in the face, causing him to fall to the floor. Delgado then continued punching the man before he grabbed the hat and fled the scene.

Hermosa Beach Police were notified of the assault shortly after and began investigating the assault. Sgt. Robert Higgins said investigators used available “resources” and surveillance footage to ID possible suspects, which they narrowed down to Delgado.

Delgado was subsequently arrested Tuesday in his home in the Winnetka-area of Los Angeles. He was arrested on suspicion of robbery and battery with serious injury, though formal charges have not been filed. He was released shortly after on $100,000 bail.
