A man in India allegedly attacked a pet dog and its owner's family with an iron rod after the canine barked at him.

The incident took place in the national capital of Delhi. Local media released CCTV footage, which showed the man hitting the dog and then its owner, identified as 25-year-old Rakshit, with a rod. When Rakshit's family members tried to intervene, the accused hit one of them also with the rod.

“During enquiry it was found that one person namely Dharamvir Dahiya was strolling in the street in the morning. Then one pet dog owned by a resident of A block Paschim Vihar started barking. At that [time] Dharamvir Dahiya picked the dog up with its tail and threw the dog away,” deputy commissioner of police Sameer Sharma said, according to Telangana Today.

When Rakshit saw this, he immediately intervened. A minor scuffle broke out between the accused and the owner of the pet, during which the dog bit Dahiya. The severity of the injury caused by the dog bite was not known.

“After some time Dharamvir Dahiya came back at the spot with an iron pipe and brutally hit the dog on its head,” the DCP said.

In the video, the dog could be seen lying unconscious for sometime after he received a severe blow to his head.

Soon, more people from the neighborhood came to the rescue and snatched the iron rod from Dahiya. Authorities said three people were injured in the attack, and they were admitted to a hospital for treatment, according to India Today.

The police registered an FIR under sections 308 (Attempt to commit culpable homicide), 323 (Punishment for voluntarily causing hurt), 341 (Punishment for wrongful restraint) and 451 (House-trespass in order to commit offense punishable with imprisonment) of the Indian Penal Code read with section 11 of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.

"Investigation of the case is in progress and facts are being verified," the police said.

It remains unclear if the accused has been arrested. The condition of the dog also remains unknown.
