A man in India beat his pregnant wife, young children, and mother to death in a drunken state.

The accused, identified as Manikanta Swamy, returned home from work Wednesday night and started drinking alcohol. In a drunken stupor, the man picked up an iron rod and started beating his pregnant wife, identified as 28-year-old Ganga, and his two children, aged 4 and 2, with it.

When his 60-year-old mother tried to stop him, he started attacking her too. Upon hearing the woman’s screams, neighbors rushed to the spot and found all the four lying unconscious. They tried to restrain the accused, who eventually managed to escape. The incident took place in the southern state of Karnataka, local daily Kannada Prabha reported.

Police arrived at the scene after receiving a call from one of the neighbors and pronounced all the victims dead. A case was filed and a search launched for the accused as of Thursday morning, The Times of India reported.

Police told local media that the investigation revealed the man was under the influence of alcohol when he beat his family member to death. The motive behind the crime was, however, not known.

Meanwhile, the bodies of the victims remained at the residence as of Thursday morning as their relatives told the police that they will not conduct the last rites until Swamy is taken into custody.

The incident comes weeks after a man in the southern state of Andhra Pradesh hacked six family members of a person to death after the latter allegedly cheated on his daughter and married another woman. The accused’s daughter and Vijay were in a relationship and were set to tie the knot. This betrayal took a toll on the accused’s daughter’s mental health. In order to take revenge, the accused barged into their home and killed them while Vijay was away. After the murder, the accused went to the police station and surrendered himself.
