A 21-year-old man chopped off his sister's husband's head and walked to the nearby police station with the severed body part in a sack, in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh.
On hearing the news, the 19-year-old sister of the accused committed suicide by hanging herself from a ceiling fan.
Dheeraj alias Monto Shukla was intercepted and arrested by the police on his way to the station, The Indian Express reported.
Police said the incident occurred Thursday morning after Deeraj saw his brother-in-law Brijesh Burman, 32, lurking around the house. Dheeraj chased Brijesh with an ax before he chopped his head off.
He put the head in a sack and was on his way to the police station when local people noticed the bloodied ax and sack. They alerted the police who then apprehended him.
A report said the families of the accused and the victim are in the liquor business, following which the accused's sister Pooja and Burman met. They fell in love and wanted to get married but the families disagreed with their union. Following this, they eloped three months ago and tied the knot.
Their parents had filed a missing person's complaint after the incident and the couple was located on Feb 27 in a nearby village.
Though the incident was said to be an honor killing and Dheeraj had planned revenge ever since the couple eloped, police said the accused was upset as Pooja was unhappy in her marriage.
“Puja had returned to her maternal house as Brijesh would often beat her up after the two would argue. She had returned a day before the incident,” said Chief Superintendent of Police Ravi Chouhan.
The police have recovered the victim’s headless body from a nearby field. An investigation has been launched in the case to determine if the accused instigated Pooja to commit suicide.
In a similar incident, a father had beheaded his teenage daughter and then walked to a nearby police station carrying the severed head, in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, a few days ago. Shocked people who saw the man walking on the street with the severed head in his hand alerted the police, following which he was arrested. The man later admitted to police about killing his 17-year-old daughter.
