A man cut a snake’s head off with a sickle after spotting it on the side of the road in the Malaysian state of Kelantan.

A video of the incident, shared by the Facebook group Persatuan Haiwan Malaysia on Thursday, showed the man provoking the reptile with a sickle before chopping its head off. He then shows the severed head of the snake to the cameraman.

In a post accompanying the video, the group wrote, “Many species of animals will be affected during the flood season. Most feared are poisonous animals that come out of their habitats to seek shelter and safety. People outside are advised to take extra precautionary measures during floods and high tides. Keep yourself well-prepared with the presence of poisonous animals in every corner of the house and on the street. Safety comes first.”

According to local reports, the snake was just “minding its own business” when the man stopped his motorbike and launched an attack on it. It was not known what species of snake it was.

Meanwhile, the video of the incident has gone viral and has left the Facebook users divided over the man’s actions. While some reprimanded him for killing the snake, others felt he did the right thing as the venomous snake was a “threat.”

“The snake didn’t pick a fight with you, it was just defending itself since you were a threat to it. That’s also its habitat, it’s not like it was within your compound where you could chase it away,” one wrote.

“Venomous animals can be killed, if it was a threat to the community. It’s the monsoon season, many snakes will be looking for shelter in people’s homes. Don’t wait until it enters your house and you have to call the fire department. Don’t wait until a family member dies from a bite and you have to be sad and regretful. So it’s best to avoid it as early as possible. Kill or be killed,” wrote another.
