A man stabbed his neighbors' dog and vandalized their home after the canine barked at him. The incident took place in the southern Indian state of Kerala on Saturday night.

Sali Santhosh, the dog’s owner, tied the canine, named Blackie, in the porch after it started barking at her neighbor, identified as Ajith Kumar. A few minutes after she went inside her home, she and her husband, Santhosh Kumar, heard a loud noise and rushed outside to find their neighbor hitting the canine with a stick. When Santhosh tried protecting his pet, the neighbor attacked him before stabbing the canine with a knife. Ajith then went on to vandalize their home.

Recalling the incident, Sali said, “On the day of the incident, I saw Blackie barking at Ajith. I then tied him up in the porch and went inside the house. Later, we heard a loud sound, then Blackie whimpering and something hitting the window. When Santhosh tried to block him, he was also assaulted.”

Sali said the accused was drunk at the time of the incident.

“We got scared and went inside the house. Ajith then fell on the ground. After some time, he returned with his brother Anil, entered our house and started breaking all the objects here. They also destroyed our cars, furniture and appliances," she told local website the News Minute.

Meanwhile, the couple rushed the canine to a nearby animal hospital with a nine-centimeter deep wound on his body.

"The dog needs long-term treatment. Initially, we thought he was dead. We can't see him like this. We got him when he was a few days old," Sali said, adding that she believes the accused stabbed the canine because it barks at him.

"Whenever Blackie sees Ajith passing by our house, he barks. But the gate would be locked, and he has never hurt anybody," she said.

A police complaint was filed and the accused was charged with animal cruelty. Ajith and his brother were also charged with assault, house trespass and house braking. Police were investigating the incident and both the men remained absconding as of Tuesday.
