Man Diagnosed With 'Eggplant Deformity' After His Genitals Crack And Turn Purple
A 50-year-old man was diagnosed with "eggplant deformity," a rare penile disorder that caused his genitals to enlarge and turn purple.
The man, who lived in Indonesia, went to the hospital after noticing swelling and unusual discomfort for four hours. He complained of pain and told the doctors that he felt a "crack" in his phallus that made his urethra bleed during intercourse, Insider reported.
The patient was unable to urinate and had bleeding in the urethral. A thorough clinical evaluation zeroed in on “eggplant deformity” in the patient.
The penile fracture was treated after the doctors sliced the man's member to pull back the outer skin, the doctors wrote in The International Journal of Surgery Case Reports. They remedied his broken urethra and erectile tissue with stitches that are absorbable. They also opened his scrotum to discharge the blood clot seen during his initial diagnosis.
"Penile fracture happens when an erect penis sustains a blunt trauma during sexual intercourse or otherwise..." noted the authors of a paper in the British Medical Journal.
Penile fractures can usually be diagnosed in the early stages depending on the patient's medical history and physical wellbeing. Additional testing such as ultrasonography and MRI can be performed in alarming conditions.
The symptoms of penile fracture include a sudden snapping or breaking sound, discomfort, and quick detumescence. Inflammation and redness of the penile shaft also occur, which might spread to the lower abdominal wall.
The urgency of surgery is of utmost importance if a penile fracture is diagnosed. Sutures are made on the tissues of the penis and a procedure is done to repair the urethral and connect the broken or diverged tissues and veins. To prevent recurrent blood clots, the clots are drained.
The doctors tested the man's genitals following treatment by administering an artificial erection. They found no issues like fluid leaks or a bent penis. He was sent home after five days of rest at the hospital. For 21 days, the man was asked to urinate through a catheter implanted into his urethra.
The patient had no severe concerns four months after the surgery but had a slight penile tilt. He had no trouble voiding and having intercourse.
