A 33-year-old man in India died after he was given the wrong injection while undergoing treatment for a fractured hand at a hospital, the victim's family alleged. The patient, identified as Sunil Pal from the state of Uttar Pradesh, died Friday.

Pal had visited a private hospital in Kanpur city for a regular check-up on Dec. 10. The facility staff administered some injection following which his health deteriorated, The Times of India reported. He was later declared dead by the hospital.

Pal's family said he had been undergoing treatment at the hospital after he fractured his hand nearly three months ago, according to Live Hindustan [Google Translate].

“Sunil started feeling uncomfortable as soon as the hospital staff administered him an injection. Later, his condition worsened. When we asked the staff to do something, they told us to take him to the GSVM medical college-run Cardiology hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival. My son died within 15 minutes and it’s all due to the negligence by the hospital staff,” The Times of India quoted the deceased man’s father, Sukhlal Pal, as saying.

Following the man's death, his family members filed a complaint with police. An autopsy was performed Saturday and cops are awaiting results to determine the cause of death.

The hospital has not spoken out about the accusation of negligence. No charges have been filed so far in the case. It remains unclear if the patient was frequently visiting the hospital for treatment. The type of injection that was administered to him was also not known.

Last week, an eight-month-old boy in the eastern Indian state of Jharkhand died a day after he received a vaccine. The child's condition deteriorated rapidly after the vaccine was administered and he died while on the way to a hospital the following day. The unnamed infant was given the DPT (diphtheria, pertussis and tetanus) vaccine.

The health worker who administered the vaccine, identified as Sunita Kumari, was suspended after the child's father claimed his son died of medical negligence. Authorities launched an investigation into the incident.
