A 25-year-old man in the Indian state of Maharashtra allegedly hanged himself after being mentally tortured by his girlfriend.
The man, identified as Ramesh Ravindra More, was found dead Saturday morning at an area in Nashik City that was under the jurisdiction of Adgaon police, the Times of India reported.
His cause of death was determined to be hanging after a postmortem examination.
More, who was originally from the city of Jalgaon, had an affair with a 45-year-old mother of four and moved to the town of Ozar to stay at her home, a report by CNN-News18 said.
However, the woman started to mentally torture More into getting married after she suspected that the latter would leave and marry another woman.
More called the woman Friday and stated he was ending his life due to her demands before he hanged himself inside his room, as per the Times of India.
He was found hanging from the ceiling fan when the woman broke open the room's door in front of the building's landlord and neighbors.
The woman, with the help of her son and one of his friends, took More's body under the pretext of taking him to the hospital. However, they instead dumped his body on an open plot.
They allegedly wanted to make the death look like the result of a road accident and attempted to destroy evidence.
All three accused were arrested and given three-day police custody.
In a similar incident from more than half a year ago, a 20-year-old man in the state of West Bengal died by suicide following his forced marriage.
Manik Mandal was forced by a village court, the "salishi sabha," to marry an unnamed minor girl at a local temple in Malda on July 18, 2021.
Mandal's family pointed out that the girl was a minor, but none of the other villagers listened.
"My son was mentally depressed because of the decision imposed on him. We also felt humiliated by the manner in which he was forced to marry the girl," Mandal's mother, Shyamali, said.
Mandal, who was under the legal marriage age of 21, hanged himself at home after the ceremony.
A case was registered following the incident, according to Malda police chief Alok Rajoria. An investigation was also launched.
