A man escaped from home quarantine and bit an elderly woman to death. The incident took place in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu on Friday.

According to local reports, the man, identified as Manikandan, was asked to remain in home quarantine for 14 days after he returned from Sri Lanka. After staying at home for a week, the man slipped into depression and on Friday afternoon, he tore his clothes off and ran out of his home. Manikandan then ran toward a 75-year-old neighbor sleeping outside her home and bit her.

Neighbors arrived at the scene after hearing the woman’s screams. They tried to stop the accused who was trying to flee. The neighbors managed to restrain Manikandan and handed him over to the police. They then rushed the elderly woman to a nearby hospital where she succumbed to injuries the following day.

Confirming the incident, a police officer said, “The incident happened in the afternoon on Friday. We have registered a case against Manikandan under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). The hospital just confirmed that he is mentally stable, we are waiting for the official reports.”

On the same day, a man in Tamil Nadu killed himself after he was forced to live in isolation. Police said the man, identified as 28-year-old Suresh, had a travel history to the Maldives. Fearing that the man could be infected with coronavirus, the family sent him to their farm house and asked him to live in isolation. Depressed about not being able to have a conversation with his family and friends, the man killed himself by hanging from the ceiling of the home.
